Lesson 2 - Why play bridge - 5 mins

Why play bridge?

Here are four reasons:

  • It costs virtually nothing

All you need is a pack of cards and three (or two) other people. You don't have to leave home and you can write the score on some white space on a used newspaper, if you want. There's no other cost.

  • It's fun

Bridge is a social game played on every continent by all sorts of people from Bill Gates and Omar Sharif, through to me and maybe you.

It offers:

- highs and lows

- intellectual challenges

- great social gambling opportunities

- company and companionship

- a setting of your choice; your home; a bar etc

  • It's fast

Bridge is a fast game and each hand takes about 5 minutes. There are over 53 octillion (billion, billion, billion) possible hands, so each hand you play is pretty likely to be a brand new experience. For contrast, a human body is made up of about 7 octillion atoms. Atoms tend to be very small.

  • It's healthy

Playing bridge is a unique mental workout that is both relaxing and invigorating.
